Thursday, September 20, 2012 around 6:12 in the morning A 52-footer pregnant SPERM WHALE was found dead floating offshore east of this city. Lieutenant Commander Elizer Dalnay, of the Zamboanga Coast Guard Station (ZCGS), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) spotted the whale on the said time when the BFAR surveillance ship was travelling from the nearby province of basilan.
To my surprise, the dead whale is a child-bearing cow. :(
(I couldn’t refer to you the current gestation week of the whale since it was not stated in the news)
The cause of the death of the sperm whale was due to natural sickness according to the City Veterinarian Dr. Mario Arriola. He also stated that there we’re holes and scratches on the whale’s carcass. The estimated weight of the whale was around 30 ton’s and was loaded on a 18 wheeler trailer truck which was buried at the fish cemetery of the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology.
